NERC has now announced its new Expanded Operator Certification program. All NERC approved training taken on or
after April 1, 2006 will qualify under the program. All of the OPS-X training modules qualify for CE credits under
the new NERC program and may be applied to meet BOTH the Operator Certification and Emergency Operations requirements.
If your NERC Operator Certification expires in the next three years, get started now on obtaining the NERC CEH's that
you will need to maintain your certification. We have a 40 CEH program ready now and more on the way.
NERC has had many requests for information concerning what subjects should be studied in preparing for the system
operator certification examination.
As stated in the NERC Program Manual, "the
content outline for an examination is the best source for the subject material upon which questions on that particular exam
are based . It is the responsibility of each candidate to prepare for an examination on the subject material contained
in the content outline for a particular examination. "
The following information was obtained from the NERC website, https://soc.nerc.net/examinfo/2006_ExamStudyGuide.pdf
Solely as an aid in preparation for one of the system operator certification examinations, the Examination Working
Group has authorized the release of some additional information. This listing
is not meant to be an all-inclusive list; however, the following should be reviewed while preparing for one of
the system operator certification examinations.
None of the examinations have questions from all of the references listed below, and there is a good chance
an examination may include questions from other areas, but the list below, in
conjunction with the content outline for the examination, can be used as a study guide.
1. There might be questions on any or all of the Reliability Standards that
were adopted by the NERC Board of Trustees during their February 2005 meeting, especially those that pertain to system operations.
2. There might be questions on any of the terms in the Glossary of Terms
Used in the Reliability Standards published in February 2005.
3. There might be questions on any of the information contained in the Power
System Operations, Third Edition, authors: Miller and Malinowski: Chapters 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
4. There might be questions on any of the information contained in the Electric
Utility Systems and Practices, Fourth Edition, author: Rustebakke: Chapters 12 and 14.
5. There might be questions on any of the information contained in the EPRI
Tutorial 2002: Glossary and chapters: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 11.
As you can see, no one source presently exists to cover the entire scope of the new test but we are striving to
develop one. OPS-X covers Power System Fundamentals, EHV Operations, Congestion Management, System Restoration and Transmission
Operations based on the new Reliability Standards. It does so more efficiently than any training program on the
market as it allows for self-study and it trains "by doing" thereby shortening the amount of time required to learn the principles
and vastly increasing the retention rate of the material.
OPS-X will prepare you for the 2007 Operator Certification Exam and our text "Electric Power System Reliability-2007"
will provide you with a targeted summary of the 2006 NERC Reliability Standards .
If taking and passing the new Exam is one of your objectives for 2008, please contact us for assistance in your
preparation. We can provide you with a self-study program or a week long on-site program each of which includes our
OPS-X training and our new text.
